Bean Thumblatches
Traditionally used on a ledge and braced door, a thumb latch set is a decorative door latch with a thumb shaped lever. When the thumb shaped lever is pressed down this operates a thumb bar which passes through the door, this lifts the latch bar on the opposite side causing it to open.
Our blacksmith thumblatches are hammered to shape from mild steel using the traditional manufacturing method of an anvil and fire. Once the mild steel thumblatch has been hand forged it is finished in our factory in our available finishes, which includes beeswax, external beeswax, black powder coated or pewter patina. The end result is a strong, beautifully detailed product ideal for any traditional project.
Our bean thumblatches are offered in a variety of options, including standard, heavy for larger doors, XL for thicker doors and slim for finer doors.
We also offer matching penny end T hinges and bean ‘D’ handles.
Beeswax Finish - (For Internal Use Only)
Our beeswax finish is the most authentic finish for steel. When forging has finished the colours left in the steel range from blue to deep red ochre. To preserve these beautiful colours we recommend periodically maintaining this with our beeswax maintenance wax. This gives a subtle, matt richness to the metal and offers excellent protection when products are fitted internally and properly maintained.
