Setting up a Home Office: The Essentials

By Martin Hart on Thu 05 March 2020

Once you decide to work from home, setting up a home office is absolutely crucial, as you need a way to separate your work from your play. If it’s your first time, it can be difficult to know where to start – what furniture do you need, and what equipment will help you to get the job done? Here are a few essentials which no home office should ever be without: A Sturdy Desk

The desk is where the magic happens, so you need to make sure that you have a sturdy piece of furniture with plenty of space for all your bits and bobs: your computer (or laptop), papers and documents and maybe even a plant to help oxygenate the room should all fit, whilst still leaving room for you to knuckle down with a pen and paper if the occasion calls for it.

An ideal desk will also give you plenty of storage space, with cubby holes for important items like USB drives and disks, and drawers to help you de-clutter – get all last month’s papers out of sight or you’re going to find that they give you a headache every time you enter the room.

Calm Lighting

It’s easy to overlook the lighting when you’re setting up a room, but it’s actually one of the most important ways to make sure that your work space inspires productivity rather than migraines! Keep the area bright and breezy during the day by taking advantage of natural light – try and set yourself up near a big window that lets in the sun.

For evening and winter work, you’ll benefit more from the soft glow of a lamp than an overhead light, as this will make the room feel much more inviting. The importance of getting a relaxed atmosphere can’t be overstated, as you’re far more likely to get things done if you want to do your work.

Make Things Comfortable

As well as making your home office inviting, you’ll want it to be comfortable. That doesn’t mean giving yourself an excuse to slouch down in the armchair, but following ergonomic design rules that boost your productivity and stop injuries or back ache. Find a chair that supports you properly, make sure that the top of your monitor is slightly below eye level and keep items that you need frequently within arm’s reach so you’re not constantly straining.

Once you have these essentials in place, you can decorate to your heart’s content; one of the best benefits of a home office is the fact that you can personalise it to make it yours.
