Importance of Protecting Wooden Doors

By Martin Hart on Thu 05 March 2020

Wooden doors can be a great feature for any house, as they can add authenticity to your client’s home. They are also incredibly sturdy and, if treated carefully and properly, they can last a reasonable amount of time.

We at Hart Wholesale are able to supply products that you can use in your client’s home, one of which is incredibly vital for wood treatment; OSMO Door Oil. But why is it important to protect wooden doors with these treatments?

It Can Protect the Wood from the Elements

If you are working on a project and you need to install a wooden door in a kitchen that connects to an outhouse area, then that door will be prone to be in contact with the outside weather. Because of this, you need to make sure that the door can cope with harsh weather conditions, such as strong winds, water, and even ice in the winter.

When using wood treatments, it adds an additional layer of the wood that is flexible, meaning that when the wood starts to expand and contract when it interacts with the weather, it is ensured that it will not crack or split.

Another important aspect of wood treatments is that the barrier coating the wood needs to be strong enough to protect the wood from the sun’s damaging UV light. UV light destroys the lignin within the wood, which is the component that hardens and strengthens the cell walls. Therefore, for untreated wood, it is common to find that the wood is a lot weaker than treated wood.

It Can Add an Attractive Element

Traditional wood treatments are also known as stains, which can give the wood a darker colour, making the wood stand out more, whilst also protecting it. Stains come in three different forms: oil, resin, or alkyd.

The way that the stain works is that it binds to the pigments that are present on the surface of the wood. Once it has bonded to the pigments, it sinks into the wood, meaning that it can protect the deeper layers of the wood. There are some woods that accept the stain a lot easier than others. For example, softwoods are less dense than hardwoods, so softwoods like cedar accept it more than oak.

It Lowers Maintenance Time

One of the best things you can do for your clients is to make sure that you make their lives easier day to day. By using a wood stain, it is considerably easier to apply and to maintain when compared to using paint.

When painting a door, you need a primer to treat the wood beforehand, whereas using a stain can be completed immediately. This means that, for your clients, they won’t have to retreat their doors for years to come.

There are numerous benefits for using wood stains when you are installing wooden doors for your clients, and you always want to make sure that the client is happy with the end result. With our line of OSMO Door Oil, you will be safe in the knowledge that your clients will be extremely happy with their wooden doors.
