Eliminate Chills with Small Renovations

By Martin Hart on Fri 06 March 2020

Your space may be kitted out with all the home comforts and mod cons, but if there’s a chill in the air due to poor insulation then this can be the source of most of your discomfort. But the lack of heat doesn’t just take a toll on your well-being, it’s a major waste of money and energy.

There are many ways you can insulate properties, but first you have to locate the major source of the problem before embarking upon expensive renovations. Here are a few factors that could be causing cool air to circulate.

Windows

There are a number of ways you can secure windows to minimise the loss of heat by installing different window fixtures. Especially if your windows have their original fittings, it might be an idea to upgrade your windows with a set of sturdy handles and locks.

Loose window fixtures can cause window panes to rattle and gaps that expose the window ledge to the elements could cause weather damage. To give your window extra protection, apply glazing strips which do a terrific job of blocking any tiny cracks in the window sill.

Doors

If windows aren't the problem, and you've still got a draught sweeping through your hallway, then the problem may be coming from your doorway. Be sure to eliminate cold air coming from rooms that you don't heat, keeping the air isolated by closing the necessary doors.

The doors you then want to focus on are the ones with exterior access. Breezes can be blocked with the use of weather seals. These can come in the form of brush seals, strips of adhesive foam or your standard door seal.

Room to breathe!

Even though you're focussing on reducing heat loss, you've got to make sure that you leave some air in circulation. Bacteria thrive in humid air, especially if it isn't flowing in and out regularly and bringing fresh air inside.

Whether it's with an extractor fan to take out damp air, or the use of wall vents to let small amounts of fresh air in, installing a ventilation system is important for a happy and healthy atmosphere.
